With falls from vehicles accounting for around a third of all workplace transport injuries, suitable measures should be put in place to prevent falls from happening.
There are some basic principles for working at height, and they apply equally to working at height on a vehicle. In law, work at height means ‘work in any place where a person could fall a distance likely to cause personal injury if no precautions are taken’. It includes getting on and off a vehicle trailer or climbing into or out of a lorry cab. Although some people might not regard work below average head height as ‘work at height’, the law requires people to consider falls from any height where someone could be injured, including falls from trailers or the tops of vans. In fact, most of the injuries reported to HSE resulting from falls from vehicles are from a fall from below head height. The most common area of the vehicle for people to fall from is the load area, followed by the cab access steps and fifth wheel catwalk, you don’t have to fall far to land hard.

When climbing on and off the vehicle, HSE suggests there are always at least three points of contact. The TransGard range offers the full package, complete with two access steps and two grab handles. It is recommended that the first step is positioned so it can be easily reached, approximately 40cm from the ground (no more than 70cm).
All components are finished in a bright yellow colour, to ensure they’re highly visible when loading and unloading the vehicle.
The above is an easy to install system that increases safety. You have an option of safety rail/fall arrest bars in powder coated yellow or a choice of fall arrest straps either with cam buckle or ratchet buckle options, again in bright yellow and embroidered ‘Fall Arrest’ at intervals along the strap.
The fall arrest bars fit onto the vehicle bulkhead and rear posts with a bolted cup system and secured into place with a sword pin & chain to make them easily removeable.
The fall arrest straps fit onto the vehicle bulkhead and rear posts via a bolted D-Ring with twisted snap hooks each end and are available from 2.5m – 6.5m.
Fall protection straps are approved according to the standard of load restraint assemblies on road vehicles, EN 12195-2.
